there's no doubt that flac is fine when judged in a vacuum, but it doesn't look very good in contrast to its competition. flac was passed by wavpack for speed and compression some time ago, and as wavpack is supported by rockbox, there's no longer any point to choose flac for portability either.the advent of tak, the speed and compression of which even beat wavpack, now makes flac seem destined for third place, albeit third in a very strong field. four stars, and dropping, for this one-time king of the lossless hill.

considering the free alternatives, this os needs some serious added incentives to make it appealing. this os is aimed at tech types who know about free alternatives like ubuntu so it would only be worth installing the final rtm if it costed less than and had some real ms innovation for a change. but knowing ms that won't happen. the slogan for this os could be:"home server: the fail starts now"@fidelio they may be based on the same code but that doesn't mean anything. windows xp home and windows server 2003 enterprise are built on the same codebase. so what.

i guess it's nice that it's free, but it really isn't that good at what it does.if it was specialized to work as an icon editor, that would probably be fine. but because it is trying to branch out into larger bitmap editing, it ends up feeling like an unsuccessful hybrid.the icon editing is compromised (less efficient, less effective, less intuitive) due to the lack of dedicated icon-only tools in the interface.the bitmap editing is an afterthought, and all it seems to do (at least for me) is confuse the issue and distract from what it could be if it was a single-use app.it's not absolutely horrible, but it's not that great, so i guess a rating of 3 will do the trick.

a for effort, c for execution, hence the four stars.oh, i liked how it made things look, but there is a glitch in how it works. when i opened an application, such as notepad or wordpad, there is a perceptible flicker as the cleartype is overriden by the gdipp setting. also there is no graphical application that i could find for fine tuning the settings.

well, i hate to write a bad review but this version was crashing on me left and right and i have to go back to 2.14. i think it might be related to hardware accel but i am going to wait a few betas and see if it is a regression or bug that gets fixed. can't use it right now. speedwise, it seems even faster than 2.14.

this is a codec package like every other - it does what it should and works fine for me for years. no malware or other brain-melting stuff in it.
